Indian Navy's underwater weapon to neutralise stealth ships, submarines now ready for induction

In a development that will give the Indian Navy an edge over the most modern stealth ships, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Navy successfully conducted combat firing—with reduced explosives—of the indigenously designed and developed Multi-Influence Ground Mine (MIGM).

MIGM is an advanced underwater naval mine designed to enhance the Indian Navy's capabilities against modern stealth ships and submarines. Deployable from ships and submarines, MIGM is equipped with advanced sensors that can detect acoustic, magnetic, pressure, and unique electric field signatures generated by various marine vessels.

According to reports, MIGM has a built-in electronics system which comprises data acquisition electronics with ARM processors and peripheral devices for processing the data.

The mine is developed by the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory, Visakhapatnam, in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories—High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, Pune and Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory, Chandigarh.

Bharat Dynamics Limited, Visakhapatnam and Apollo Microsystems Limited, Hyderabad are the production partners for the system.

DRDO chairman Samir V. Kamat said with this validation trial, the system is now ready for induction into the Indian Navy.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh complimented DRDO, the Navy and the industry for the achievement.
