India @2047 Summit: Jayen Mehta Highlights Amul’s Role in Building a $1 Trillion Cooperative Economy
At the India @2047 Summit, Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of Amul, emphasized the critical role of cooperatives in realizing the vision of a developed India by 2047. Reflecting on Amul’s journey since 1946, he highlighted how the cooperative model, inspired by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, transformed India into the world’s largest milk producer. With over 36 lakh women contributing daily to Amul’s network, Mehta stressed the power of women-led development in rural India. Mehta shared Amul’s impressive growth—reaching over 90,000 crore in turnover and expected to cross ₹1 lakh crore soon. He attributed Amul’s success to its unique model of professional management and farmer ownership, where 80% of every rupee spent by consumers reaches the farmers. He also discussed Amul’s global expansion, with products now sold in over 50 countries including fresh dairy in the U.S., and its diversification into organic and protein-based products. Looking ahead, Mehta emphasized the cooperative sector's potential to contribute $1 trillion to India’s $5 trillion economy vision. He concluded that India’s development dream will be realized when the cooperative and corporate sectors collaborate, upholding trust, quality, and inclusivity.
