Mumbai News: Western Railway Launches Real-Time Side-Mounted Digital Displays On Local Trains To Improve Commuter Experience
Mumbai: For the first time, real-time train information will be visible on the side walls of local train rakes—a move expected to transform how commuters identify and access their trains. In a significant step toward improving the commuting experience for millions of daily passengers, Western Railway has launched an innovative external digital display system on its Mumbai suburban local trains.
Previously, train journey details were only available through station-based public announcement systems and limited onboard displays. Recognizing the need for clearer, more accessible information, the Mumbai Division has pioneered the installation of Full HD panorama digital display units on the motorcoaches of local trains. Each train rake is equipped with eight digital screens—four on each side—mounted strategically for visibility from the platform.
Currently, the system has been installed on one 12-car rake, with plans to extend it to 10 more rakes in the next phase. Eventually, all remaining rakes will be fitted with these displays.
According to an official, per rake cost is approximately Rs 14 lakhs. This includes the software integration that ensures the accuracy of displayed information. As soon as the train number is fed in by the guard before departure—a mandatory step—the display automatically updates, thanks to the integrated software system.
These displays provide real-time journey information such as train number, destination, and service type (slow or fast). The content toggles every three seconds in three languages—English, Hindi, and Marathi—to cater to Mumbai’s diverse commuter base.
"The new side-mounted display units feature advanced technical specifications, including Full HD TFT screens protected by toughened glass and an additional 5 mm polycarbonate layer. They offer a brightness level of 700 cd/m² and a wide viewing angle, ensuring visibility from up to 5 meters away. In-built sensors automatically adjust contrast for optimal readability under various lighting conditions" further added official.
The displays are securely mounted using in-house designed brackets and a fail-safe split pin locking mechanism, ensuring stability and safety during operations.
This initiative, spearheaded by the Mumbai Central EMU Carshed, is expected to reduce commuter confusion, enhance platform efficiency, and provide a more informed and hassle-free journey experience.
"With this development, Western Railway continues to demonstrate its commitment to modernization and commuter-centric innovation within the ever-busy Mumbai Suburban Rail Network" further added an official.
