Capt Batra trophy to celebrate courage, sportsmanship
In a heartfelt tribute to the bravery of Param Vir Chakra awardee and Palampur native Captain Vikram Batra, Arni University has launched a three-day inter-departmental cricket league titled the Captain Vikram Batra Memorial Trophy. The tournament, held on the university campus, aims to foster sportsmanship, unity and physical fitness among students and staff.
Dr Vivek Singh, Chancellor of Arni University, not only presided over the inaugural ceremony but also led from the front by participating in the opening match as captain of the team Boundary Breakers. The first face-off of the tournament saw Boundary Breakers competing against Wicket Warriors, with enthusiastic cheers echoing across the grounds from students, faculty and staff alike.
Highlighting the inclusive spirit of the event, a special exhibition match was organised between two women staff teams—Twinkle Titans (teaching staff) and Rosewood Warriors (non-teaching staff). The match underlined the university’s commitment to promoting gender inclusivity and encouraging broader participation in sports.
A total of 10 teams, representing various departments and including both men and women players, are participating in the league. “This tournament is a reflection of Arni University’s dedication to creating equal opportunities for all, while also promoting a healthy and vibrant campus life,” said Dr Singh.
He further emphasised that sports play a critical role in personality development by instilling values such as teamwork, discipline, leadership, and physical well-being. “Events like this are vital to developing a well-rounded educational experience,” he added.
Dr Singh concluded by stating that the Captain Vikram Batra Memorial Trophy is more than just a cricket tournament—it is a celebration of courage, commitment and community spirit, inspired by the life and legacy of a national hero.
