Mumbai Police's 'Digital Rakshak' Helpline Saves 5 Citizens From Fake ‘Digital Arrest’ Cyber Fraud Attempts

Mumbai: In the era of increasing digital convenience, cybercrimes are evolving rapidly. With growing usage of social media, online banking, shopping, and gaming, cybercriminals are adopting newer methods to deceive people.

One such emerging threat is the concept of a "Digital Arrest", which has recently seen a spike in cases. To counter this, the Mumbai Police launched the ‘Digital Rakshak’ helpline on April 16, 2025.

In these frauds, scammers impersonate officials from CBI, ED, Customs, or Police, and contact victims claiming their names are linked to cases involving drugs, illegal transactions, or forged documents. They send fake notices via WhatsApp, follow up with video calls to create fear, and demand money under the guise of a “security bond.”

In one such incident, a senior citizen from Chembur received a threatening video call, during which the fraudster claimed to have issued a digital arrest. He was instructed not to speak to anyone. Luckily, his daughter noticed his distress, questioned him, and learned about the situation.

She immediately contacted the Digital Rakshak helpline, shared the fake ED notice, and the police confirmed it was fraudulent. Timely intervention saved him from becoming a victim.

So far, five citizens have been protected through this initiative. Citizens can contact the Mumbai Police via WhatsApp or call at 7715004444 or 7400086666. The police have urged the public to stay alert and remember that "digital arrest" is not a valid legal procedure. Any suspicious message or call should be promptly reported.

The Digital Rakshak helpline is proving to be a powerful shield against cyber fraud, providing quick assistance and building trust among citizens.
