Marginal farmer champions daughters’ sports dreams
Jaswinder Singh, a marginal farmer, is living his dream through his daughters, who are his pride and joy. His daughters, Brahmjot Kaur (20) and Inderjot Kaur, are excelling in sports, winning medals in various competitions. Both are dedicated athletes with aspirations to achieve greatness in their field.
Singh had dreams of playing sports in his youth, but the loss of his father at a young age forced him to abandon those dreams. However, when he was blessed with daughters, he noticed their natural inclination towards sports, reigniting hope in his life.
Owning just three acres of land, Jaswinder has made it his mission to support his daughters’ ambitions, refusing to let financial constraints hinder their progress. “I work as a farm laborer to save money for my daughters’ sports needs,” he explained. “I buy shoes and sports kits with the money I save.”
Brahmjot is currently pursuing a B.Ped course, while Inderjot has started her B.A. degree. Last month, Inderjot won a bronze medal at the state-level athletic championship.
She expressed her determination, stating, “I want to earn and reach great heights. I want people to know me for sports. I practice daily for four hours. My sister and I want to make our father proud.”
For Jaswinder, his daughters’ sports careers take precedence over everything else, including his own work. He accompanies them to their training ground, which is 10 km away from their home, every day. “I go with my daughters for training every morning,” he said. He also has a younger daughter and a son, who has recently shown interest in wrestling and has begun winning competitions.
Two years ago, his elder daughter was selected for the Khelo India camp. “Whenever my daughters compete anywhere in the country, I have to cover expenses for tickets, lodging, and other necessities out of my own pocket. Only I know how I manage these costs. I often seek help from friends and relatives. I would appreciate it if the government recognised my daughters’ achievements and provided support,” Jaswinder added.
