CBI arrests two PWD officials in Poonch for accepting bribe

POONCH, May 7: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) in Surankot area of Poonch district for accepting bribes in exchange for processing a GPF claim.
In a press statement, CBI said, Farooq Ahmed, Assistant Accounts Officer, and Mohammad Riaz, Junior Assistant-both posted in the office of the Executive Engineer, PWD, Surankot-were caught red-handed while accepting bribes of Rs 20,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively.
As per the agency, the duo had initially demanded Rs 30,000 and Rs 8,000 from the complainant to release his General Provident Fund (GPF) amounting to Rs 5.04 lakh but after a negotiation, they agreed to settle for Rs 20,000 and Rs 5,000.
Acting on the complaint, a trap was laid on May 6 and the accused were arrested during the act, the statement said.
“Both the accused were produced before the Special Judge for CBI Cases, Jammu today and sent to one-day police custody,” it said.
Searches at the homes and offices of the accused in Poonch led to the recovery of incriminating documents, the statement further said.
Meanwhile, further investigation is underway.
