Praveen Sood gets 1-yr extension as CBI Director

The Centre on Wednesday extended the tenure of CBI Director Praveen Sood by one year. Sood took over as the CBI director on May 25, 2023, for a two-year term, slated to end on May 24.

The decision was taken in a meeting of the selection committee, headed by PM Modi, and comprising CJI Sanjiv Khanna and LoP in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, on Monday. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), based on the recommendations of the selection committee approved the extension.

It was decided to give Sood an extension, as the committee apparently could not arrive at a consensus over selecting his successor. BSF Director General Daljeet Chawdhary and Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora and CISF DG RS Bhatti were the contenders for the post.

Sood is a 1986-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Karnataka cadre. He was working as Karnataka’s director general of police (DGP) when he was named as the director of CBI.
