Jodhpur Schools Closed Amid Rising Tensions Between India and Pakistan From May 8

In response to the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the Rajasthan government has announced that all schools in Jodhpur will remain closed starting Thursday, May 8, 2025, until further orders. This directive, issued by the District Collector, also applies to both government and private schools, as well as Anganwadi schools and play schools in the region.

The official order, which was issued on May 7, 2025, stated: "In light of the current situation, all government, non-government schools, Anganwadi schools, and play schools in the district will remain closed for students starting from May 8, 2025, until further orders. All educational and non-educational staff will remain present at the school to carry out departmental work. During this period, all scheduled exams will be postponed until further notice.

It is directed that all institutional heads ensure compliance with this order, failing which action will be taken against them as per the rules."

The closure comes amid rising tensions following Operation Sindoor, where the Indian Armed Forces launched strikes on nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on May 7, 2025. In addition to the school closures, Air India and Indigo have canceled all flights to and from Jodhpur until May 10.

Precautionary school closures were also observed in other border districts of Rajasthan, including Ganganagar, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, and Barmer, on May 7, 2025. These measures are being taken given the proximity of Rajasthan's 1,070 km border with Pakistan, which has heightened security concerns.

“Considering the present situation education institutions, schools, colleges in Baramulla, Kupwara and Gurez will remain closed for today. Authorities have urged the public to remain alert and stay calm, while follow official advisories as a precautionary measure,” Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Vijay Kumar Bidhuri stated to local media.

X handle of Divisional Commissioner of Jammu also posted an update about the closure of schools and colleges in the area. The handle posted, "In view of the prevailing situation, all schools, colleges and educational institutions in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri and Poonch will remain closed today.”

School closures were also reported in the Punjab districts of Ferozepur, Pathankot, and Amritsar, in response to the ongoing situation.
