Army Chief Meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi Today After Retaliatory Action
Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his official residence on Thursday. The meeting comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions following Operation Sindoor and Pakistan’s attempted missile and drone attacks on Indian military targets during the night of May 7-8.
The Ministry of Defence, in a handout, said Pakistan launched an offensive on the night of May 7-8, targeting 15 military locations across northern and western India, including Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, and Bhuj. These attacks were thwarted by India’s Integrated Counter-UAS Grid and air defence systems.
In response, the Indian Armed Forces launched precise strikes early Thursday morning on Pakistani air defence radars and systems. The Defence Ministry confirmed that an air defence installation near Lahore was successfully neutralised.

This comes just a day after India’s missile strikes under Operation Sindoor that hit nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, including key JeM and LeT strongholds.
India has continued to frame its response as focused, measured, and non-escalatory, emphasising that Pakistani military facilities were not targeted unless provoked. However, Pakistan has escalated tensions by increasing artillery and mortar shelling across the Line of Control (LoC), affecting areas such as Kupwara, Uri, Poonch, and Rajouri.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed the loss of 16 civilian lives, including women and children, due to unprovoked Pakistani firing. India was compelled to respond in kind to neutralise these threats.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said on Thursday that the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 people, was the trigger for India’s calibrated military response. He noted that Pakistan had shown “no demonstrable step” to dismantle terrorist infrastructure on its soil despite repeated evidence provided by India over past incidents like the 26/11 and Pathankot attacks.
India reiterated that its actions remain proportional and strictly targeted at terrorist infrastructure and that any attack on Indian military targets will continue to invite a “suitable response.”
