Indore : Rare Kidney Cancer Surgery Saves Life Of 74-Year-Old Patient At MY Hospital
Indore (Madhya Pradesh): In a remarkable medical feat, doctors at MY Hospital successfully removed a cancerous kidney from a 74-year-old patient suffering from a rare and aggressive form of renal cancer, saving the elderly man's life.
Dr Arvind Ghanghoria (MGM College Dean) personally examines surgical patients in the outpatient department (OPD) of MY Hospital, which is affiliated with MGM Medical College.
The patient, Shambhu (74), a resident of Palda, approached the OPD with symptoms including blood in urine, abdominal pain, a palpable mass near the kidney, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, fever, night sweats, difficulty swallowing, chest pain, and a sensation of heaviness or bloating in the stomach.
Upon thorough examination and diagnostic testing, Dr Ghanghoria diagnosed the patient with Aggressive Squamous Cell Renal Carcinoma—a rare and fast-spreading cancer originating in the squamous cells of the kidney's pelvis, not its outer cortex.
The cancer had also started affecting nearby organs, including the spleen and part of the large intestine, making the case more complex and life-threatening if not operated on urgently.
Without delay, Dr Ghanghoria admitted the patient and conducted further investigations. On Thursday, he led a highly delicate four-hour surgery, successfully removing the cancer-affected kidney without harming the adjacent spleen or intestine.
He explained that the operation was extremely challenging due to the patient's advanced age and fluctuating blood pressure. The surgery also required temporarily blocking the kidney’s blood supply, which posed additional risk if extended too long.
Post-surgery, the patient is now stable and recovering well. Encouragingly, Dr.Ghanghoria confirmed that no further chemotherapy or radiotherapy would be necessary.
Speaking about the operation, Dr Ghanghoria said, “Being a doctor is a privilege. Serving humanity is serving God. Saving lives, especially of the poor and vulnerable, is my foremost duty and calling. A surgeon is not just a doctor, but also a creator in their own right.”
The surgery was supported by Dr Naveen Gupta and a dedicated medical team, whose contributions were instrumental in the success of this rare and life-saving procedure.
