Streets as playgrounds risky reality for children

Ludhiana, a city in the heart of Punjab, lacks playgrounds for children which in turn is forcing these young minds to unleash their enthusiasm on the streets and concrete roads by converting them into makeshift grounds. This practice actually puts the children at risk of being hit by vehicles or suffering injuries.

Interestingly, the city’s rapid urbanisation has led to the mushrooming of illegal colonies and most of them lack even the smallest of parks or green spaces where children can play.

“My child always wants to play after studying but where can he go? Since there are no playgrounds, the streets are the only option, but it’s terrifying to think of him playing amidst speeding cars and trucks,” says Harpreet Kaur, a concerned mother.

“Playing on the streets is a gamble with fate. Children can get seriously injured or even lose their lives in untoward incidents. It is our responsibility as a society to provide them with safe spaces to play and grow,” added Harpreet.

Lack of playgrounds not only affects the physical health of children but also their mental well-being because children are forced to stay indoors where they spend much time on mobile or TV screen. “Children need spaces to take out their hidden talent through outdoor activities. Without these spaces, they may become restless, anxious or even aggressive,” says Sangeeta Arora, another mother.

As the city continues to grow, it’s imperative that the authorities take notice of this pressing issue. “We need to prioritise the creation of playgrounds and parks in our city. Even when colonisers develop colonies, they must develop sports park for children,” added Sangeeta Arora.

Overall, residents feel that children in the city deserve better. It’s time for the authorities to take action and provide them with the safe spaces they deserve — to play, grow and thrive. By doing so, we can ensure that Ludhiana’s future generations are healthy, happy and full of life, they said.

Interestingly, some areas have developed big lush green parks but children are not allowed to play in them on the pretext that children may destroy the grass, plants and other forms of greenery.
