India logged 19.7L excess deaths in 2021, 6x official Covid toll: Government data

Official data reveals a significant undercount of Covid-19 deaths in India during 2021. Excess deaths, calculated by comparing registered deaths to pre-pandemic projections, were about 20 lakh, six times higher than the official Covid death toll of 3.3 lakh. States like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal showed the highest discrepancies, while Kerala and a few others had the least.
