Airports shut, foreign tourists in dilemma

Foreign tourists are anxious and in a dilemma after the Indian Government temporarily closed several airports in northern states for commercial operations, as tensions with Pakistan escalated after the Pahalgam terror attack.

The Indian Government suspended civilian flights from the airports at Jammu, Srinagar, Pathankot, Amritsar and Kullu, citing security concerns and airspace management.

The retaliatory strikes by Indian armed forces have disrupted the travel plans of international tourists. Linda, a tourist from the UK, expresses concern over her international flight from New Delhi on May 16 while Michal from Israel cancelled her planned June visit altogether.

“We are on a trip in Himachal and have booked a flight from Kullu to New Delhi for the return journey. But now we’re stuck and don’t know what to do,” says Alan, a visitor from the USA, who is held up with his group in Kullu. He adds, “Tour operators don’t know when flights will resume and we’re nervous about how the situation will evolve.”

Beyond logistical challenges, travellers are also worried about their personal safety amid heightened uncertainty. The embassies of various countries have issued travel advisories, urging their citizens to avoid non-essential trips to Jammu and Kashmir and areas near the Pakistan border.

Besides, tour operators and hoteliers in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have reported booking cancellations and growing unease among foreign guests. “This is the peak tourist season and we’re facing losses because many visitors are either leaving early or cancelling their bookings altogether,” says Ramesh, a hotel owner in Manali.

Despite rising concerns, the Indian Ministry of Tourism has assured travellers that most of the regions are safe and operational. Officials have urged the public to stay calm and rely on verified sources for updates.
