Leh, May 9: Despite prevailing security tensions, the people of Ladakh are standing shoulder to shoulder with the administration and armed forces, displaying unity, resilience and readiness to face the challenges together.
In Leh district, precautionary measures have been swiftly implemented by the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) under the leadership of Chairman Tashi Gyalson to ensure public safety and maintain calm.
As part of these measures, all Government and private schools have been closed. Flight operations to and from Ladakh remain suspended, stranding several tourists, while the use of drones has been temporarily prohibited by the District Magistrate to prevent any security risks.
A brief power blackout on the evening of May 8 caused momentary panic among residents but the administration has requested the cooperation of the public as such measures need to be repeated.
Religious and political organisations have expressed full solidarity with the Government. The Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) has affirmed its commitment to support the administration and even declared readiness to mobilise volunteers if needed, a reflection of Ladakh’s longstanding tradition of civilian support for the Indian Army, dating back to 1948, during all wars fought on Ladakh’s soil. Ladakhi students studying in Jammu, Chandigarh and Delhi are also being closely supported. An Emergency Support Centre has been set up at Ladakh House in Jammu. CEC Tashi Gyalson chaired a virtual review meeting with student union leaders from these cities, who reported a generally stable situation but shared concerns over misinformation and exam stress.
Liaison Officers have been directed to coordinate with transport departments and prepare for evacuation if necessary. Students will be accommodated at Ladakh Sarai and other designated locations in case of emergency. Student unions have also been asked to maintain coordination and compile lists to ensure smooth communication and preparedness.
Meanwhile, the Buddha Purnima celebration in Ladakh, scheduled for May 12, will now be scaled down. The grand function planned at the Polo Ground has been cancelled. Instead, the celebration will be held at the Dharma Centre, where prayers will be offered for world peace.
