Tahawwur sent to Tihar till June 6

The 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana was on Friday taken to the Tihar Jail amid heavy security after a Delhi court remanded him to judicial custody till June 6.

Earlier in the day, a Delhi court remanded Rana in judicial custody after he was produced before a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) Judge Chander Jit Singh, a day before his NIA custody ended.

Rana, a close associate of the main conspirator of the 26/11 attack, David Coleman Headley alias Daood Gilani, was brought to India after the US Supreme Court on April 4 dismissed his review plea against his extradition.

He has been under NIA custody since April 11. His initial custody was for 18 days, which had ended on April 28, when the court had extended the custody for 12 more days after the agency told the court that Rana could spill the beans on the ongoing and future terror plans of the outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba and its chief Hafiz Saeed.

The agency said it was interrogating Rana in a “measured" manner, considering his health as opposed to his claims of being questioned 20 hours a day. The NIA had sought his custody, claiming non-cooperation on his part. On April 30, the court allowed the agency to collect Rana’s voice and handwriting samples.
