Rajesh Khanna’s film that left Censor Board stunned, was a remake of…, had special connection with former PM Jawaharlal Nehru, movie is…, lead actress is…

Movies with bold storylines and bold scenes were often a hot topic among people in the initial days of cinema. Not just the audience, but even actors and actresses used to be hesitant about signing a film that required them to perform certain bold scenes. However, what if we tell you that in 1980, a movie was released that shook everyone because of its storyline? The movie featured the first superstar of Indian cinema, aka Rajesh Khanna, in the lead role. Not only that, the explicit scenes from the film also created a massive uproar among fans.

According to reports, Rajesh Khanna did this film while his career was declining. The movie we are talking about is none other than ‘Red Rose.’ Released in 1980, the movie was a remake of the Tamil film ‘Sigappu Rojakkal’, which starred Kamal Haasan and Sridevi in lead roles.

On the other hand, Rajesh Khanna’s movie ‘Red Rose’ featured Poonam Dhillon as the leading lady. In the film, Rajesh Khanna’s character was that of a serial killer, which came as a shocker for Kaka’s fans as they had loved to watch him in romantic roles. However, in ‘Red Rose’, Khanna kept on killing one girl after another.

Even the leading female cast, Poonam, was unhappy with the film, especially when a bathtub photo of her was used in the promotional posters of the movie. Rajesh Khanna took a big risk during his declining career. He chose a completely different character, away from his established romantic image—that of a rich but mentally unstable businessman ‘Anand’, who would first trap girls in love and then brutally murder them.

Censorship

Do you know that before the movie was released, the plot of the film was considered extremely bold? Hence, the censor board took a tough decision. The makers had demanded an ‘A certificate’, but after watching the film, the board said, “How can a superstar do such a dirty thing? This is not fit for public viewing.” The revising committee also upheld this decision. Then the producers directly approached the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, from where they finally got the approval to release the film.

Special Connection with Jawaharlal Nehru

Do you know that the film had a connection with former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru? According to News18 reports, while the censor board had issues with the film, Rajesh always kept a red rose in his coat, which was a symbol associated with Jawaharlal Nehru. The censor board did not like this similarity. After a long struggle and months of delay, the film was released. It did not do well, mainly because of Rajesh Khanna’s role.
