National award-winning makeup artist Vikram Gaikwad passes away at 61
Renowned makeup artist Vikram Gaikwad, an iconic figure in Indian cinema, passed away in Mumbai on Saturday, May 10. Celebrated for his remarkable artistry and attention to detail, Gaikwad earned multiple National Film Awards and left his mark across Hindi, Marathi and South Indian film industries.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde confirmed his passing and paid tribute to the veteran artist on social media. Offering his condolences on X, Shinde wrote, “With Vikram Gaikwad’s passing, we have lost an accomplished artist whose contribution to Indian cinema and theatre is immeasurable. On behalf of myself and the Shiv Sena party, I offer heartfelt tributes.”
According to a report by Maharashtra Times, Vikram Gaikwad’s final rites will be conducted at the Shivaji Park Crematorium in Dadar, Mumbai, around 4:30 PM on May 10. The cause of his death has not been revealed yet.
Vikram established himself as a master of makeup artist with his first film Sardar. Later, he showcased his impressive artistry in several Hindi blockbusters like Panipat, Bell Bottom, Uri: The Surgical Strike, Blackmail, Dangal, PK, Super 30, Kedarnath, Thugs of Hindostan, and The Legend of Bhagat Singh.
In Marathi cinema, he made an unforgettable impact with his work in films like Balgandharva, Ani… Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar, Lokmanya, Katyar Kaljat Ghusali, Fatteshikast, Pawankhind, and Sher Shivraj. Beyond films, his craft was equally revered in the world of theatre, where he worked on the makeup for Janata Raja, the renowned stage production based on the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
