Rahul, Kharge demand special Parl session to discuss Pahalgam attack, Op Sindoor

A day after a US-brokered ceasefire was announced between India and Pakistan, the Opposition led by Congress on Sunday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government to call for a special Parliament session, post “Operation Sindoor” and subsequent truce with the western neighbour.

Leaders of the Opposition in both Houses have written to the PM, urging him to call a special Parliament session to discuss the prevailing situation, Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam terror attack.

In his letter, Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said he “reiterates the unanimous request of the Opposition to convene a special session of Parliament immediately”. It is crucial for the people and their representatives to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor and the ceasefire, first announced by US President Trump. This will also be an opportunity to demonstrate our collective resolve to meet the challenges ahead,” Rahul said in the letter.

Mallikarjun Kharge, LoP in the Rajya Sabha, in a separate letter, said he supported Rahul Gandhi’s request.

Earlier, on April 28, the two senior Congress leaders had written to PM Modi demanding a special session in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 civilians dead.

“The Opposition believes that a special session of both Houses of Parliament should be convened, where the representatives of the people can show their unity and determination,” Rahul had said in his earlier letter.

Post Pahalgam attack, the Opposition extended its “full support” to the government in whatever decisions it wanted to take against terrorism.

Following the ceasefire, the Congress leadership and its cadre have been flooding their social media walls with the message ‘it is not easy to be Indira’ drawing comparisons with the 1971 India-Pakistan war, when late PM Indira Gandhi headed the affairs of the country.

Meanwhile, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav also urged the Prime Minister to convene a special session of Parliament.

“The PM is requested to provide date-wise and point-wise details — from the terrorist incident in Pahalgam to the ceasefire — taking the country into confidence. This will enable all Indians, through Parliament, to collectively express their gratitude for the valour and courage of the Indian Army, share their views on various aspects and send a unified message from the entire nation to ‘Aantakistan’, which runs a laboratory of terror,” the RJD leader said.
