Buddha Purnima: RBI Declares May 12 As Bank Holiday
Banks are closed in several cities on Monday, May 12, on the occasion of Buddha Purnima. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has listed this day as a holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
Despite physical branch closures, digital banking options such as UPI,IMPS,online banking, and mobile apps provide access to banking services like money transfers,bill payments, and others.
Banks are shut in the following cities: Agartala,Aizawl,Belapur, Bhopal,Dehradun,Itanagar,Jammu,Kanpur,Kolkata,Lucknow,Mumbai,Nagpur,New Delhi,Raipur,Ranchi,Shimla, and Srinagar.
However, banks are open in cities such as Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Gangtok, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Imphal, Kochi,Kohima,Panaji,Patna,Shillong, and Thiruvananthapuram.
Trading continues as usual in the equity, equity derivative, and SLB segments on both BSE and NSE. Stock markets are open on Monday (May 12).However, there is no trading in the currency derivatives segment on May 12. BSE has also declared a settlement holiday for this segment.
Independence Day, August 15,2025 will see the next stock market holiday.
May 16( Friday): State Day - Holiday in Gangtok.
May 26(Monday):Birthday of Kazi Nazrul Islam- Holiday in Agartala.
May 29(Thursday): Maharana Pratap Jayanti - Holiday in Shimla.
Banks will also remain closed on all Sundays (May 18 and 25) and the second and fourth Saturdays (May 24).
