The incident occurred when a two-wheeler caught fire unexpectedly while petrol was being filled, triggering panic among customers and staff. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.
Terrifying Moments Caught On CCTV
The entire episode was captured on the petrol pump’s CCTV camera. In the video posted on X by News18 Lokmat, a Marathi news portal, a staff member can be seen refuelling a motorcycle when his mobile phone rings. Moments later, flames suddenly shoot out from the bike’s fuel tank.
In a state of panic, the rider quickly abandons the bike, while the alert pump employee immediately grabs a fire extinguisher and brings the blaze under control. His swift response prevented what could have escalated into a major fire with possible injuries or fatalities.
Customers present at the petrol station fled the scene in fear as the fire broke out, creating brief chaos and tension at the site. Thankfully, due to the quick action of the staff, the fire was extinguished before it could spread further or damage nearby vehicles and infrastructure.
Incident Sheds Light On Hazards Of Using Phone At Petrol Pump
The incident has raised fresh concerns about mobile phone usage at fuel stations. Authorities have reiterated long-standing safety guidelines, stressing that mobile phones should be switched off, not merely locked, when entering any petrol pump premises. Using phones near fuel dispensers can pose a serious fire risk due to the possibility of sparks or electronic interference.
Officials have also urged the public to use caution with digital payment methods such as UPI when at petrol stations. Although digital payments are convenient and widely used, experts suggest opting for cash in such high-risk zones to eliminate any chances of accidental ignition caused by mobile phone use.
