Bank Holidays: Banks To Remain Closed For Up To 3 Days This Week, Check State-Wise Calendar HERE

Customers across India should prepare for limited banking access this week as a combination of regular weekend breaks and a public holiday will see branches shut on multiple days. Starting with the weekly Sunday closure on May 11, banks will also remain closed on Monday, May 12, in observance of Buddha Purnima. This extends the non-working stretch for many banking customers to two consecutive days.

The bank holiday calendar is published by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) every year. This list includes national holidays, regional celebrations, weekend leaves, and special occasions. Banks across the country remain closed on Sunday  and the second and fourth Saturdays. The RBI’s list ensures state-specific observances are considered, and customers should note that holiday dates can differ based on regional significance.

Bank Holidays This Week

Here’s a quick look at the closures lined up for the week between May 11 and May 18, and what customers should expect during these periods.

May 11 (Sunday): As per standard practice, all banks including State Bank of India (SBI) will remain shut on this weekly holiday.

May 12 (Monday): Banks across the country will be closed on account of Buddha Purnima. This includes major cities and state capitals such as Agartala, Aizawl, Belapur, Bhopal, Dehradun, Itanagar, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Ranchi, Shimla, and Srinagar, among others.

May 16 (Friday): In Sikkim, banks will remain shut to observe State Day, a regional holiday.

May 18 (Sunday): Banks will once again be closed due to the regular weekly off.

Given these closures, customers are advised to complete any in-branch banking tasks after May 12, especially if they live in states observing Buddha Purnima. Those in Sikkim should plan for an additional closure on May 16.

What Services Are Still Available?

While branches remain closed on these dates, digital channels will continue to function without interruption. Banking apps, internet banking portals, and ATMs are operational 24/7—even on public holidays—allowing users to carry out essential financial transactions like fund transfers, utility bill payments, or balance checks.

However, it’s worth noting that some services, such as cheque clearances and transactions involving promissory notes, will not be processed during bank holidays.

Bank holidays are structured to accommodate both national and regional observances, meaning there is often variation in closures between states. For the most accurate and updated information, customers are advised to check directly with their local branch or bank website. This helps in avoiding disruptions, especially during times when multiple holidays fall close together.
