Mumbai: A 23-year-old resident of Wadala West, working as a research intern at a private company in Andheri, became a victim of an online call girl service scam. The youth lost a total of ₹6.10 lakh after being duped under the pretext of availing the service. He lodged a complaint at the Matunga police station, following which a case was registered against an unidentified individual on May 12.
According to the FIR, the victim, identified as A. Krushna, works as a research trainee in a private company in Andheri West. At around 11:30 p.m. on April 4, he searched for call girl services on Google.
During the search, he came across a website that displayed a WhatsApp number. When he contacted the number, he was informed that the service would cost ₹3,000, with an advance payment of ₹500 required. He transferred ₹500 via Google Pay.
Subsequently, he was sent photos of several women and was told that a girl would be sent to his home with a driver upon selection. He was then asked to provide an OTP and pay an additional ₹3,000. Over time, further payments were demanded in the name of a security deposit, insurance, GST, processing fees, and police verification.
Due to continuous threats and pressure, the victim ended up transferring a total of ₹6.10 lakhs between April 6 and April 9 to various bank accounts and UPI IDs. When he requested a refund, he was assured the money would be returned within 48 hours, but no refund was made.
On April 11, he received another WhatsApp call from an unknown number, demanding an additional ₹95,560. Growing suspicious, he stopped engaging and called the cybercrime helpline (1930) on April 13 to lodge a complaint. He also submitted a written complaint at the Matunga police station.
The victim further stated that between May 4 and May 12, the same number contacted him again, and another ₹25,000 was extorted from him through threats. It is alleged that the fraudsters had obtained his Aadhaar details and location.
