Any Issue Pertaining To J-K To Be Addressed Between India And Pakistan Bilaterally: MEA

India reaffirmed its consistent position that any issues pertaining to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir must be resolved bilaterally between India and Pakistan. Speaking at a presser, the spokesperson of the Ministry Of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, said that the stated policy has not changed. He also added that the outstanding matter is the vacation of illegally occupied Indian territory by Pakistan.

"We have a long-standing national position that any issues pertaining to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir have to be addressed by India and Pakistan bilaterally. That stated policy has not changed. The outstanding matter is the vacation of illegally occupied Indian territory by Pakistan," Jaiswal said on Tuesday as quoted by news agency ANI.

Speaking on the Indus Water Treaty, Jaiswal said that after the CCS (Cabinet Committee on Security) decision, the Indus Water Treaty has been put in abeyance.

“I would also like to take you back a little. The IWT was concluded in the spirit of goodwill and friendship as specified in the preamble of the treaty. However, Pakistan has held these principles in abeyance by its promotion of cross-border terrorism for several decades now. Now as per the CCS decision, India will keep the treaty in abeyance until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism,” Jaiswal said.

He also said that climate change, shifts in demography and technological changes have created new realities on the ground as well.

He further added that India’s stand is clear and consistent from the start: the terrorists' infrastructure operation out of Pakistan will be targeted. He also added there is no problem if the Pakistani military stays out, but if they fire, India would respond suitably.

“Till the night of 9th May, Pakistan was threatening India with a massive assault. Once their attempt failed on 10th May morning and they received a devastating Indian counter-response, their tune changed and their DGMO eventually reached out to us…,”Jaiswal said.
