Poonch’s Shaheen becomes first FIVB Level-1 female Volleyball Coach

JAMMU, May 13: Shaheen Akhtar from district Poonch has made history by becoming the first woman from Jammu and Kashmir to qualify as a Level-1 Volleyball Coach under the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). She achieved this milestone after successfully completing a five-day specialized coaching course organized by the BVL Foundation of Assam at Guwahati.
Shaheen, a former national-level volleyball player, has represented Jammu and Kashmir with distinction in numerous tournaments. She has also completed the prestigious NS NIS coaching certification from Bangalore, further strengthening her professional credentials in the sport.
Currently, she serves as a coach at the Shaheed DySP Manjit Singh Memorial Volleyball Club, Poonch, where she trains young and aspiring volleyball players, especially girls, encouraging sports participation in the region.
She was the only participant from J&K among the 12 candidates selected from across the country for the FIVB Level-1 course. Her achievement marks a significant step forward for women in sports coaching in the Union Territory.
Mohd Tariq, Chairman of the Volleyball Club, extended heartfelt congratulations to Shaheen for her remarkable success. The club also expressed gratitude to Abhijit Bhattacharya, organizer of the course, and G.E. Sridharan, former national coach of India, for sharing invaluable experiences and guidance during the training. Shaheen’s accomplishment is being seen as an inspiration for aspiring female athletes and coaches in Jammu and Kashmir.
