Airtel Call Services Go Dark Across Tamil Nadu & Kerala, Now Back Online: Report

Airtel Down: Airtel users in Tamil Nadu and Kerala reportedly faced a frustrating evening on Tuesday as a network disruption rendered call services unusable for hours. While mobile data continued to work, customers found themselves unable to make voice calls — a problem that persisted well into the night.

The issue, as reported by The Hindu, which began around 7:00 pm, prompted a surge of complaints on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), particularly from cities such as Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, and regions in Kerala. Users reported dropped calls and complete call failures, leaving many stranded without voice connectivity.

Outage-tracking platform Downdetector received a flood of alerts during the disruption, logging more than 8,400 reports by 9:00 pm. Its heat map pinpointed major affected areas including Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Madurai.

However, upon checking Downdetector on May 14 morning, ABP Live found that Airtel services has resumed normalcy as reports of outage have visibly gone down.

Social Media Flooded with User Reports

As word of the outage spread, X was inundated with messages from frustrated customers sharing their experiences and tagging Airtel’s support handles. Some noted the lack of updates or explanations in real-time, further amplifying the frustration.

The telecom provider acknowledged the disruption shortly after the complaints gained momentum online.

Airtel Responds, Services Restored

Confirming the issue, the telecom operator said the problem was localised to certain regions in the south. “We regret to inform that Airtel is currently facing a temporary network disruption in certain areas of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Our technical teams are diligently working to address the issue and restore services as quickly as possible,” an Airtel spokesperson told The Hindu.

As of the morning of May 14, as mentioned earlier, Downdetector indicated that the services were back to normal, and reports of outages had significantly declined.

Data Unaffected, Voice Calls Hit

Interestingly, while voice services bore the brunt of the issue, mobile data remained unaffected throughout the disruption. For many users, that provided a temporary workaround — using internet calling apps to stay connected.
