Why Is Sawan Considered Important?

According to the Skanda Purana, Lord Shiva once told Sage Sanatkumara that the month of Sawan is extremely dear to him. Every date and day in this month is filled with festivals and fasting rituals. Worshipping with discipline and devotion during Sawan enhances one’s spiritual strength and grants divine blessings. It is also believed that Lord Shiva visited his in-laws' house during this month, where he was welcomed with a ceremonial water offering.

The Significance Of Rudrabhishek During Sawan:

The sacred ritual of Rudrabhishek, or the ceremonial bathing of the Shivling, is deeply connected to the legend of Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean). During the churning, the deadly poison Halahal emerged, which Lord Shiva consumed to save the world. The poison generated immense heat in his body. To soothe him, the gods continuously poured water over him. This led to the tradition of offering water and other sacred items to the Shivling during Sawan.
