Justice BR Gavai became the 52nd CJI of India: Justice BR Gavai has taken oath as the 52nd Chief Justice (CJI) of the country. Today President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath of office and secrecy to him. This moment is important not only for the Indian judiciary but also for social justice, as Justice Gavai is the first Buddhist to hold this post and the second person from the Scheduled Caste community after Justice KG Balakrishnan. Justice BR Gavai replaced Justice Sanjiv Khanna whose term ended. Justice Gavai’s tenure as CJI will be relatively short, as he is to retire on November 23, 2025.
The swearing-in ceremony of CJI Justice Gavai was held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the presence of President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, former President Ram Nath Kovind and other dignitaries.
Who is Justice BR Gavai?
Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was born on November 24, 1960 in Amravati, Maharashtra. He was enrolled as an advocate on March 16, 1985. In his initial years, he worked with former Advocate General and High Court Judge late Raja S Bhosale. He started independent practice in the Bombay High Court in 1987.
Justice Gavai was appointed Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor in the Bombay High Court, Nagpur Bench in August 1992. He became the Additional Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor in January 2000. He was elevated as Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in November 2003. He became a permanent judge on November 12, 2005. During his tenure, he headed benches at Mumbai, Nagpur, Aurangabad and Panaji and handled cases from all areas.
He was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019 and was nominated by Justice Sanjiv Khanna as the next CJI in 2025.
Justice Gavai was involved in the judgment of many important cases
Justice Gavai is known for his judgments in controversial and important political cases. He was part of the constitutional bench that struck down the 2018 electoral bond scheme. He was also part of the bench in important cases including the cases involving NewsClick founding editor Prabir Purkayastha and former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. In November 2024, a bench led by him held that demolition of citizens’ properties (bulldozer action) without following due process is against the rule of law.
