New Delhi: Over the past few months, the Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology has gained significant buzz in India and across the globe. With continuous updates and information being released, public excitement around this service is steadily growing. According to the reports, the technology might soon be launched for the general public. Pilot projects have already been completed, the technology is technically ready, and the necessary devices have also been developed.

However, the service is still awaiting approval from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Once it receives the green light from the government, this technology could prove to be highly beneficial for millions of users across the country.

What is D2M technology?

D2M (Direct-to-Mobile) technology is a broadcast technology that allows live TV, video, audio, and text messages to be delivered directly to mobile phones via terrestrial television broadcast airwaves, without requiring Wi-Fi or internet connectivity. This means users can access content on their phones without relying on a cellular data connection.

What is the benefit?

  • A major benefit of D2M technology is that it will reduce the load on mobile networks and decrease data consumption.
  • The technology will be especially useful in areas where it is difficult to set up network infrastructure or lay broadband lines.
  • D2M can prove to be highly beneficial in such regions. It can even bring internet-like services to forests and remote areas.
  • Saankhya Labs, a Bengaluru-based company and part of Tejas Networks, has developed a special chip called SL3000.
  • With this chip, mobile phones can directly receive content via broadcast.
  • This technology has been developed in collaboration with Free Stream Technologies, which originated from IIT Kanpur.
  • The goal is to make mobile data more affordable, reduce network traffic, and deliver information to areas where media access is limited.

America’s Sinclair Broadcasting company has also made a significant investment in this direction, aiming to manufacture D2M (Direct-to-Mobile) feature-enabled mobile phones at affordable prices and expand access to this technology.
