Good news for Delhi Capitals, Axar Patel’s side sign star player as ‘temporary replacement’ for Jake Fraser-McGurk
The JSW and GMR co-owned franchise Delhi Capitals on Wednesday announced the signing of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman as a replacement for Australian opener Jake Fraser-McGurk, who will be unavailable for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season. Rahman, who made his IPL debut in 2016, previously represented the Delhi Capitals during the 2022 and 2023 seasons and has been signed up for Rs 6 crore.
In 2022, he picked up eight wickets in eight matches with an economy of 7.62 and in the following season, he played two matches for Delhi Capitals. Over the course of his IPL career, the 29-year-old has played 38 matches, claiming 38 wickets at an economy rate of 7.84. He has also turned out for multiple franchises in the league, forming a reputation of bowling effectively in all phases of an innings.
With 132 wickets in 106 T20Is for Bangladesh, Mustafizur has established himself as one of the leading left-arm pacers in the white-ball cricket. Across all T20 competitions in the domestic circuit and globally, he has taken 351 wickets in 281 matches.
Axar Patel-led DC had bought Fraser-McGurk for Rs 9 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction last year. Since Rahman has been signed up as a ‘temporary replacement’ ahead of IPL 2025 resumption on May 17, he will not be eligible for retention according to the new BCCI rules.
The IPL’s regulations permit teams to sign replacements in the event of illness or injury provided it occurs during or before their 12th match of the season. “This decision is subject to the condition that the Temporary Replacement players taken from this point forward will not be eligible for retention in the following year. Temporary Replacement players will have to register for the IPL Player Auction 2026,” a BCCI memo to the franchises read.
DC are still waiting to hear from a couple of first-choice players like Mitchell Starc from Australia and Tristan Stubbs and Faf du Plessis from South Africa. Starc and Stubbs are part of their respective national sides for the WTC 2025 final which starts at Lord’s from June 11.
The IPL 2025 was suspended by the BCCI last week because of India-Pakistan border tension and will resume on Saturday. The IPL 2025 final will now take place on June 3 instead of originally scheduled May 25.
