Shimla plans Rs 10 lakh insurance, health camps for sanitation heroes

In a major step towards the welfare of its sanitation workers, the Municipal Corporation of Shimla has announced plans to introduce group insurance coverage ranging from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. The initiative aims to provide financial security to the families of sanitation workers in case of emergencies.

Shimla Mayor Surender Chauhan said the proposal is currently under active consideration, with efforts being made to roll it out at the earliest. “The matter was raised during the general house meeting as well as the budget session. These workers operate under extremely challenging conditions and it is imperative that they are covered under an insurance scheme,” said Chauhan.

He described the sanitation workers as the unsung heroes of the town. “They don’t just collect waste — they uphold the dignity of Shimla. It’s our responsibility to ensure their well-being,” he added.

In addition to insurance, the MC is planning to organise large-scale free medical camps for regular health check-ups and distribution of essential medicines to sanitation workers. The workers will also be provided with new uniforms, gloves, masks and first-aid kits to enhance their safety while on duty.

To aid mobility, especially in the town’s hilly terrain, there are also plans to provide mountain bikes to the workers to help them carry out their duties more efficiently.

Chauhan appealed to residents to recognise and appreciate the hard work of sanitation workers. He also urged citizens to support them by practicing waste segregation — separating wet and dry waste — and by minimising the use of plastic.

Recently, a delegation of sanitation workers met with the Mayor to discuss their demands. Chauhan assured them that all genuine demands will be fulfilled soon.
