Beer Price Hike: Karnataka government has given a big shock to the drinking enthusiasts. The reason for this is that the Karnataka government has increased the additional excise duty (AED) due to which the prices of beer are going to increase. This duty has been increased from 195 percent to 200 percent. Not only this, the prices of cheap Indian Made Liquor (IML) brands will also increase by ₹ 15 to ₹ 20 on a quarter bottle of 180 ml. According to media reports, the Karnataka government led by CM Siddaramaiah has officially confirmed the increase in additional excise duty on beer and budget IML brands.
What is the response to the government’s decision?
The Federation of Wine Merchants Association, Karnataka and the Brewers Association of India (BAI) have opposed this decision of the government and have submitted a letter of objection. According to BAI Director General Vinod Giri, whether this increase in prices will be passed on to the common people or not will depend on the decisions of the liquor and beer companies. He said that last time when the excise duty was increased, the beer market fell exceptionally for a few months. Growth also remained stable at 1%. Vinod Giri says that if the sale of beer falls further, then the government’s revenue may decrease due to such a decision.
Federation of Wine Merchants Association Karnataka, Bengaluru also expressed its opposition in a letter written to the Chief Secretary of the State Revenue Department. They say that due to repeated increase in AED for the affordable slab, there has been a 3% decline in IML sales from the year 2024 to the year 2025. The Federation has suggested the government to reconsider the decision to increase prices and reduce it. The Federation says that due to continuous increase, liquor can come to Karnataka illegally from neighboring states. However, their appeal was not successful.
Prices increased for the fourth time in less than two years
The Karnataka government has increased the additional excise duty on beer from 195 percent to 200 percent. However, in the draft notification that was initially there, it was proposed to increase it from 195 percent to 205 percent. The increase that has happened this time is the fourth time in less than two years. IML brands have been divided into 16 price slabs and all have different AED rates. Now the increase has happened in the earlier four slabs which are the cheapest slabs of IML.
