Nirjala Ekadashi 2025 — The Most Sacred And Challenging Fast Of The Year

Nirjala Ekadashi 2025: Nirjala Ekadashi, observed between Vrishabha Sankranti and Mithuna Sankranti during the Shukla Paksha of the Jyeshtha month, is regarded as the most significant of all twenty-four Ekadashi fasts in the Hindu calendar.

For devotees who are unable to observe all twenty-four Ekadashis throughout the year, observing just Nirjala Ekadashi is believed to grant the combined benefits of all the others. However, it is also known as the toughest Ekadashi due to its strict fasting rules.

When Is Nirjala Ekadashi in 2025?

This year, Nirjala Ekadashi will be observed on June 6, 2025. It is believed that those who sincerely observe this fast attain a place in Vishnu Lok, the divine abode of Lord Vishnu.

Why Is Nirjala Ekadashi Considered The Most Difficult?

Unlike other Ekadashi fasts, Nirjala Ekadashi requires complete abstinence from food and water for 24 hours. Observing this fast during the peak summer month of Jyeshtha, when temperatures soar, makes it even more challenging. Despite the hardships, the spiritual benefits are said to be immense, with the vrata believed to open the doors of moksha (liberation).

Who Was The First To Observe Nirjala Ekadashi?

Nirjala Ekadashi is also known as Pandava Ekadashi, Bhimseni Ekadashi, or Bhima Ekadashi, due to its connection with the Mahabharata. According to legend, Bhima, one of the five Pandava brothers, was fond of food and found it difficult to fast on every Ekadashi like his brothers and Draupadi did with devotion.

Troubled by his inability to fast and concerned that he might be dishonoring Lord Vishnu, Bhima sought guidance from sage Vyasa. Sage Vyasa advised him to observe the Nirjala Ekadashi fast just once a year with complete dedication, stating that it would be equivalent to observing all the other Ekadashis. It is said that those who successfully observe this strict fast are destined for heavenly realms.
