National Dengue Day 2025 | What to be done to prevent this vector-borne disease

Dengue is a viral disease that is transmitted by the infective bite of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. The higher incidence of this mosquito-borne viral fever in recent years has compelled the government to take necessary steps in the prevention of the disease.
According to the National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control, the following are some of the signs and symptoms of dengue fever.
- Abrupt onset of high fever
- Severe frontal headache
- Pain behind the eyes which worsens with eye movement
- Muscle and joint pains
- Loss of sense of taste and appetite
- Measles-like rash over the chest and upper limbs
- Nausea and vomiting
People also need to look out for some serious dengue symptoms like frequent vomiting with or without blood, Bleeding from the nose, mouth & gums and skin rashes. Some people may also experience sleepiness, restlessness, thirst or even difficulty in breathing.
How can dengue be prevented?
Official websites mention 6 ways in which we can utilise vector control measures. They are:
Personal prophalatic measures:
- Use of mosquito repellent creams, liquids, coils, mats etc.
- Wearing of full sleeve shirts and full pants with socks
- Use of bednets for sleeping infants and young children during day time to prevent mosquito bite
Biological control:
- Use of larvivorous fishes in ornamental tanks, fountains, etc.
- Use of biocides
Chemical control:
- Use of chemical larvicides like abate in big breeding containers
- Aerosol space spray during daytime
Environmental management & source reduction methods:
- Detection & elimination of mosquito breeding sources
- Management of rooftops, porticos and sunshades
- Proper covering of stored water
- Reliable water supply
- Observation of the weekly dry-day
Health education:
Increasing awareness about the disease through various media sources like TV, Radio, Cinema slides, etc.
Community participation:
Sensitilising and involving the community in the detection of Aedes breeding places and their elimination
