Man impersonating cop held for fraud by Sangrur cops

The local police today arrested a 25-year-old youth for posing as a policeman and defrauding people of lakhs of rupees. A sum of Rs 30,000, a police uniform, a weapon and a white-colour T-shirt with a logo of the police have been recovered from his possession. A case has been registered against him under Sections 318(4), 316 (2), 205 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 25, 54, 59 of the Arms Act at City-1 Police Station, Sangrur.

Sangrur SP (Headquarter) Dilpreet Singh said the local police had arrested Amritpal Singh (25), a resident of Jollian village (near Bhawanigarh), on the complaint of one Karanvir Verma for deceiving him by taking lakhs of rupees from him in connection with a sexual assault case against his brother Taranvir Verma, a resident of Benra village.

The SP said Amritpal claimed to be a police employee who had also uploaded his photo in the police uniform with a pistol on his Facebook and Instagram accounts. He allegedly assured Karanvir that he would get the inquiry against his brother closed. He charged Rs 2.50 lakh in cash and also got Rs 2.30 lakh transferred in his bank account. Besides, Amritpal took Rs 2,00,000 from him as fee for a high court lawyer.

The SP said following Karanvir’s complaint, Amritpal was arrested. He said the police had sent the pistol recovered from Karanvir for forensic investigation to ascertain whether it is a dummy pistol or not.

The police have also registered a case against Amritpal at the City Police Station, Sangrur, for duping a Sangrur resident, Avtar Singh, of Rs 9 lakh to purchase a Fortuner car jointly.
