Greater Noida Man Suffers Serious Injuries After Toilet Seat Blows Off While Flushing

An unusual incident took place in Uttar Pradesh's Greater Noida where a young man suffered serious injuries as the toilet seat exploded after he used the flush. 

Greater Noida resident Sunil Pradhan's 20-year-old son, Ashu Nagar went to use the washroom at his house in Sector 36 not imagninig in his wildest dream of what was about to come. As soon as he pressed the flush button, a blast took place and the toilet seat was blown to pieces. 

Ashu suffered 35 per cent burn injuries on his face, limbs, and other parts of his body. He was rushed to Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), Kasana where his condition is serious but said to be stable. 

Sunil said his son was not using any electronic device inside the washroom.

What Caused The Explosion?

Preliminary investigation has suggested that the explosion could have taken place due to clogging of methane gas in the sewer line. 

According to experts, lack of ventilation and cleaning of sewer lines leads to building up of flammatory gasses like methane and hdyrogen sulphide. 

Residents of the area have alleged that a sewer line behind the P-3 roundabout has been broken for more than one-and-a-half years. Several complaints have been made to the authority but no actions have been taken yet, the residents claimed. 

A resident said that earlier vent pipes were installed on the sewer line for the gases to escape but there is no such system now due to which gas accumulates in the pipeline and reaches the toilet seat, increasing the risk of explosion.

Outrage Among Locals 

The incident has sparked outrage among the locals against the Greater Noida Authority. They alleged that the authority did not pay attention to the regular cleaning and maintenance of the sewer system. 

Alok Nagar, RWA secretary of Sector Delta-2, said that methane gas formation is common in clogged sewer lines, and if ventilation is not in place, such incidents can occur. Residents have demanded that the authorities immediately check the sewer lines and repair the pipelines to drain the gas.

Authorities Refute Claim 

However, senior manager of the authority AP Verma claimed that no fault was found during inspection of the sewer line and the system was working smoothly.

Authority's ACEO Srilakshmi VS said that this is the first such incident and it will be thoroughly investigated. The authority has also decided to get the matter investigated by IIT experts.
