World Hypertension Day 2025: The 'silent killer' that is a lifestyle check reminder to all

Launched by the World Hypertension League (WHL), May 17 is observed as World Hypertension Day to remind and raise awareness about this 'silent killer' condition.

The theme for the year, 'Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer!' aims to increase the awareness of high blood pressure and accuracy in blood pressure measurement, especially in low to middle income areas.

What is hypertension?

Hypertension or high blood pressure occurs when the pressure in the blood vessels is too high i.e. 140/90 mmHg or higher. It is common but can be serious if not treated.

According to a 2023 report by WHO, an estimated 1.28 billion adults aged 30–79 years worldwide have hypertension and 46 per cent of adults with hypertension are unaware that they have the condition.

As a part of the measures to provide standarised care to individuals living with hypertension and diabetes, the Indian government launched the '75/25' initiative two years back.

The initiative aimed to provide care to 75 million people living with the condition by December 2025. As per the Health Ministry, As of March 5, 2025, a total of 42.01 million individuals have received treatment for hypertension, while 25.27 million have been treated for diabetes, achieving 89.7 per cent of the target.

Symptoms:

Following are some of the symptoms that people with very high blood pressure (usually 180/120 or higher) can experience, as per WHO:

  • Severe headaches
  • Chest pain
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Blurred vision or other vision changes
  • Anxiety
  • Confusion
  • Buzzing in the ears
  • Nosebleeds
  • Abnormal heart rhythm

Preventing hypertension usually involves a lifestyle change to lower the high blood pressure. This can be achieved with a dietary change where more vegetables and fruits are included. Being physically active and weight loss for individuals who are overweight can help in lowering blood pressure.
