Telangana initiates AI-based cancer screening, upgrades public healthcare facility

As a part of its efforts to revolutionise the state, the Telangana government is now launching AI for advanced results in public healthcare, particularly in cancer treatment. 

The incorporation of AI in healthcare will be used for the early detection of cancer with the help of high-resolution images and reliable diagnosis. Additionally, other health issues resulting in illness would also be detected. The initiation of the AI diagnosis will be introduced as a pilot project in three districts and is expected to be adopted statewide, serving as a reference, mentioned a TOI report. 

The diagnosis provided by the AI-based scan is forwarded to the doctor and the rest of the complete analysis will be detailed to the patient by the specialist.

According to the report, the screening would be inclined more towards oral, breast, and cervical cancers which also constitute a major portion of cancer cases in India. With the current shortage of trained radiologists in the state, equipment backed by AI would enable a better diagnosis and a faster course of action for the treatment of the disease.

However, patients with a critical diagnosis will be referred to MNJ Cancer Hospital and NIMS for further treatment. It is also reported that chemotherapy services will be made available in Siddipet, Sircilla, and Adilabad, in a move that will improve the accessibility of healthcare services. 

The government has planned to provide all medical colleges with the AI facility for diagnosis after the first screening. It has also been reported that the software development is already in progress at the MNJ Cancer Institute. To support the efficiency of healthcare, the center may provide a dedicated budget for the project. The government is also planning to bring full-time centers for cancer screening in each district, provided the success of the project. 

The project is expected to maximise the efficiency of healthcare results and cater to needs accordingly.  Besides ensuring stable health, it also establishes quality results and prompt action for treatment when necessary.
