A chartered engineer by profession and a councillor by passion, Raj Kumar Mishra’s journey began in his hometown, Bhatehara, in Mirzapur. Mishra, a councillor from the conservative party, made history by being elected as the first Indian-origin Mayor of Wellingborough.

After completing his B.Tech in computer science and engineering from Punjab Technical University, Mishra left his hometown to pursue a masters in advanced computer science from the University of Leicester, England.

“When he went to London for higher education, we expected a bright career in engineering. But we never imagined he would take up politics and become the mayor of a town in England someday,” said Mishra’s father, celebrating his son’s victory. Despite their humble background, his father ensured that his children were not held back by societal prejudices and prioritised education for all his children.

In 2013, based out of Mirzapur, he founded the Shri Munna Lal Mishra intermediate college, which is aimed at providing world-class education to over 800 students in rural Mirzapur, reflecting his commitment towards the youth and his community.

Throughout his career, Mishra has worked with various organisations, including the Ministry of Defence and the banking sector. It is reported that Mishra decided to run for the town council elections back in February and joined the conservative party only in March.

On May 13, followed by a dedicated campaign, Mishra was appointed as the fifth mayor of Wellingborough during the annual town council meeting.

Mishra acknowledged that since the whole area was unfamiliar to him, it was hard at first, but he is immensely proud of the opportunity to serve his community and all of Wellingborough’s residents.

In his capacity, the mayor also serves as a civic representative, acting as a liaison between the local community and the council. Mishra has selected the Veterans Community Network, a professional veteran peer monitor service, and Louisa Gregory’s Hospice Campaign as his chosen charities for his term.

Throughout the year, his focus will lie on raising awareness, gathering support, and securing funds for the advancement of the said organisations.

“It is an honour to serve as the Mayor of Wellingborough. I am committed to working collaboratively with all residents to foster a vibrant, inclusive, and prosperous community. Together, we will build a brighter future for our town,” said Mishra in a public statement.

He further added that, “as Mayor of Wellingborough, I bring years of local insight, professional experience, and a strong passion for public service to our community. Understanding the unique needs of our area, I am committed to supporting initiatives that drive positive change.”

In his website, Mishra details his mission as one aligned with sustainability, keeping the community at heart. He also emphasises the importance of local markets and partnerships between business and educational institutions, all aimed at better economic development of the constituency. Youth engagement, safety and cleanliness, and digital innovation are some other key areas of focus.

“My approach is rooted in listening, being approachable, and acting with integrity. Together, we can build a stronger, more connected Wellingborough for everyone,” said Mishra.
