Ex-AIG’s assets worth Rs1.29 crore attached
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has provisionally attached immovable property worth Rs 1.29 crore belonging to former AIG Ashish Kapoor for the alleged violation of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The ED had initiated investigation on the basis of two FIRs registered by the Vigilance Bureau against the former officer and others under various sections of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The probe revealed that Kapoor, during his posting in Amritsar Central Jail in 2016, had resorted to extortion from two persons while they were in police custody. He had taken cash and gold from them and their family members, thus amassing Rs 1.29 crore.
Kapoor is also involved in a case regarding alleged disproportionate assets. He had reportedly acquired immovable and movable properties beyond his known sources of income in Chandigarh and Mohali in the past five years, which have been attached by the ED. He was arrested in October 2022 and is currently out on bail. The state government had granted permission to the Vigilance to prosecute him in January.
Kapoor had reportedly purchased a residential plot measuring 507.5 sq yd in Sector 88, Mohali, for Rs 90.16 lakh. He constructed a two-storeyed house on this plot between 2020 and 2022. In 2022, he bought a residential plot in New Chandigarh, measuring 241.11 sq yd for Rs 34.13 lakh.
