Two arrested after brief encounter in Sonepat

A special anti-gangster unit, in a joint operation with the Bahalgarh police, on Saturday nabbed two persons allegedly involved in the murder case of a vegetable vendor, after a brief encounter near Khewra village in the district.

One of the accused sustained bullet injuries. The miscreants were planning to loot commuters and flee. The injured has been identified as Sooraj of Kutana village in Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh, while his associate has been identified as Prince of Shamli district in Uttar Pradesh. Sooraj was admitted to the Civil Hospital.

Inspector Ajay Kumar, In-charge, SAG, in his complaint to the Bahalgarh police, said he had received a tip-off about Sooraj and Prince, who had reportedly murdered a vendor near the vegetable market two days ago, being present near a ‘kacha rasta’ in Khewra village. According to the tip-off, they were planning to loot commuters. Kumar called SI Mandeep and his team to the Bahalgarh chowk, and shared the information.

After confirming the location of the accused through the cyber cell, the police teams cornered them. As the teams approached the accused, Sooraj opened fire on them.

In retaliation, the team opened fire at the accused, causing Sooraj to sustain a bullet injury on his leg, after which he fell down. One of the teams immediately nabbed Sooraj, while the other, led by SI Mandeep, nabbed his associate, Prince. The police recovered a .32-bore pistol, mobile phone and a bag filled with clothes from the possession of the accused. The accused, in the preliminary investigation, confessed to murdering Rahul near the vegetable market two days ago, the Inspector said. The police produced Prince before a court on Saturday, with the court remanding him to one-day police custody.
