JAMMU, May 17: In a landmark achievement, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu has successfully performed its first-ever Endoscopic Trans-sphenoidal Pituitary Tumour Surgery at SMGS Hospital, marking a significant advancement in the region’s ENT and neurosurgical capabilities.
The pituitary gland, a small but vital organ located at the base of the brain, was accessed and the tumour removed through the nose using the Endoscopic Trans-sphenoidal approach-a cutting-edge and minimally invasive technique that demands high precision and teamwork.
This complex procedure was carried out under the patronage of Prof Dr Ashutosh Gupta, Principal, GMC Jammu. It was a coordinated effort between the Department of ENT, Head, Neck Surgery and Postgraduate Department of Neurosurgery, GMC Jammu. The surgery was performed by Dr Sonika Kanotra, Professor Department of ENT and Dr Furqan Nizami (Associate Professor, Neurosurgery) under the expert guidance of Dr Altaf U Ramzan, former Head of Neurosurgery, SKIMS Srinagar.
Dr Sonika was assisted by her team comprising Dr Om Prakash (Associate Professor), Dr Apurab (Associate Professor), Dr Nitika (Assistant Professor), Dr Kiran (Senior Resident), Dr Priyanka and Dr Anita Sharma. The anesthesia team, led by Dr Neha Sharma and Dr Romani, played a vital role in ensuring the patient’s intra-operative safety and comfort.
The procedure was made possible by the use of a state-of-the-art navigation system, procured through the persistent efforts of Dr Pramod Kalsotra, Head of the ENT Department. Dr Haroon Salaria (Professor and HoD) supported the procedure fully by providing technical help for the procedure.
The patient, a 65-year-old female belonging to the remote area of Udhampur district, who presented with headache recovered uneventfully and has since been discharged in stable condition.
This surgery sets a new benchmark for advanced medical care at GMC Jammu and demonstrates the institution’s growing expertise in complex, minimally invasive naso-neurosurgical procedures.
