As the fragile ceasefire came into effect on May 10, Türkiye became the focus of the ire of several Indians over its support for Pakistan. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s open support for Islamabad and the latter using several Turkish drones angered many. Without much prompting or prodding, several non-political figures began calling for a boycott of trade and other forms of engagements with Türkiye.
On May 13, JNU—a premier institution in the country—declared: "Due to National Security considerations, the MoU between JNU and Inonu University, Turkey stands suspended until further notice. JNU stands with the Nation.”
This brief statement had a cascading effect across the country, and several higher education institutions joined the call for the suspension or termination of engagements with their Turkish counterparts. Furthermore, two days later, India’s aviation security regulator Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), emulated the securitisation logic and revoked clearance for the Turkish-based Celebi Airport Services India that was looking after ground-handling in nine airports across the country.
While IndiGo, a major partner of Turkish Airlines, is still holding out, several professional bodies joined the chorus for a Turkish boycott. Who are they? Here is an ongoing list of entities that called for the suspension, termination or pause in ties with Türkiye over the latter’s support to Pakistan.
