Armed Maulana In Islamabad’s Lal Masjid Issues Death Threats, Sparks Fear Across Pakistan
Fresh tensions have emerged from Pakistan’s infamous Lal Masjid in Islamabad, as a chilling video of Maulana Abdul Aziz has gone viral. In the video, recorded just days ago, Abdul Aziz is seen wielding a weapon inside the mosque premises, threatening Mufti Abdul Qavi with dire consequences if he does not vacate the area immediately. The mufti, visibly shocked, drops his tea and leaves the room quietly after hearing the maulana's warning: “Get out or I will shoot you. Allahu Akbar.”This incident has reignited fears about the radical influence and armed dominance still rooted within the Lal Masjid. Notably, this same mosque was at the center of a deadly armed conflict in July 2007, when Pakistani military forces launched an operation after militants opened fire from the mosque. That standoff claimed over 100 lives, marking one of Pakistan's darkest internal security events. Two photos from the mosque — one taken just before India’s 2019 airstrike and another from this month — reveal the continued militarization and ideological rigidity of the site. Experts warn that the growing extremism within such religious institutions highlights deep cracks in Pakistan’s civil and military control.
