West Indies Name New Test Skipper Ahead Of WTC 2025-27

West Indies have named all-rounder Roston Chase as the new Test skipper of the side ahead of World Test Championship 2025-27. The Caribbeans endured a forgettable WTC 2023-25 cycle, where they managed to finish 8th with only 3 wins in their 13 matches.

The official appointment of Roston Chase was announced by Cricket West Indies on Friday, May 16, as they commence their new WTC cycle by hosting reigning World Test champions Australia for a three-match series in June.

Six candidates were chosen by the national board for the role, namely:

  • John Campbell
  • Tevin Imlach
  • Joshua Da Silva
  • Justin Greaves
  • Roston Chase
  • Jomel Warrican

The selectors have gone with Roston Chase to lead them in the new cycle, with Jomel Warrican named the vice-captain of the side. With Kraigg Brathwaite stepping down from the captaincy role in March this year, West Indies will be hoping for a better series of results in red-ball cricket.

Shai Hope, amongst the likely successors, opted out from the contention, stating that his focus has entirely shifted to white-ball cricket.

"The shortlisted candidates were evaluated on several key factors, including Test experience, leadership qualities and prior captaincy credentials. They then underwent a detailed assessment process that featured psychometric testing to gauge leadership style, behaviour and overall fit for the role," reported ICC, as Cricket West Indies went through a lengthy and detailed process to choose the skipper of the side.

"This was followed by structured interviews that focused on tactical approach, communication skills and alignment with team culture," added ICC.
