Chhattisgarh Man Dies In Lightning Strike While On Call As Phone Explodes In His Hand

A 30-year-old man died after being struck by lightning while speaking on his mobile phone in Chhattisgarh’s Dhamtari district. The incident occurred on Friday evening when the victim, identified as Rohit Kumar Sinha, had stepped out of his house.

Sinha was initially rushed to a nearby hospital. However, due to the severity of his injuries, doctors referred him to the district hospital. He succumbed to his injuries en route, India Today reported.

According to family members, Sinha had returned home from work and had stepped outside to inspect an ongoing toilet construction project at his residence. He was on a call when the lightning struck. “He had returned home from work and had stepped out to inspect the ongoing toilet construction work at his house when he was struck by lightning,” said a relative, as per India Today.

The lightning strike reportedly caused the mobile phone in his hand to explode, resulting in fatal injuries. A doctor who attended to the victim stated, “The mobile phone attracted lightning and this was likely the reason behind the blast, leading to the death of the victim.”

The doctor further added that mobile phones contain radiation and magnetic components, which may attract lightning strikes.

Authorities have not issued any further statement on the incident at the time of filing this report.
