A War Against Addiction
Dr. Balaram Parmar ‘Hansmukh’
The consumption of narcotic drugs and substances has become a significant problem in today’s time, affecting not only individual lives but also hindering the development of society and the country. The addiction is increasing among the youth, which is a threat not only to their personal future but also to the nation.
Addiction is a mental state in which a person loses their normal behavior and judgment due to the consumption of substances like alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, opium, and other narcotic drugs. The youth, especially girls, are falling prey to addiction due to the exposure to obscene and indecent content on social media, which is not a good sign for their future, society, and the country.
The addiction is leading to an increase in crime, violence, and mental health problems among the youth. Unfortunately, the government machinery is failing to control the problem of addiction. Revenue-driven decisions are leading to the proliferation of liquor shops, and insufficient measures are being taken to regulate the sale of narcotic drugs at pharmacies.
Society is also ignoring the problem of addiction, and those affected are not receiving the support they need. Instead, they are being ostracized, which is pushing them further into addiction, causing them to neglect their health, family, and finances.
To overcome the problem of addiction, educational, social, and cultural measures are necessary. Awareness about addiction needs to be spread in schools and colleges, and youth need to be encouraged to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Those affected by addiction need counseling and support. Anti-addiction campaigns need to be launched at all levels to raise awareness about the dangers of addiction.
Cultural programs can also play a significant role in spreading awareness about addiction. Promoting healthy life values is essential to reduce addiction among the youth. Overcoming addiction, along with other social evils, is a significant challenge that can only be addressed through educational, social, and cultural measures.
Both society and the government need to come together to fight against addiction and save the youth from its clutches. Otherwise, all material development will be meaningless.
