Karnal pays tribute to heroes with new Shaheed Smarak
In a heartfelt tribute to the fallen heroes of Karnal, a Shaheed Smarak was inaugurated at Chirao village to commemorate the brave martyrs from the district who laid down their lives for the nation. The memorial, established by the village gram panchayat, was inspired by cricketer and Haryanvi cricket commentator Sumit Narwal.
The names of local martyrs are etched into the memorial, a permanent reminder of their sacrifice. The unveiling ceremony drew a large gathering of villagers and youth, who raised stirring slogans of “Shaheed Amar Rahein” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai.”
The family of Lt Vinay Narwal, who was killed in a terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, on April 22, was present at the ceremony. His parents, Rajesh and Asha Narwal, and grandfather Hawa Singh paid floral tributes at the Smarak, with Hawa Singh hoisting the Tricolour in a poignant moment.
“We are proud of Vinay’s bravery,” said Rajesh Narwal, holding back tears. “This initiative by Sumit is commendable. Such memorials should be built in every district by the government. The stories of our heroes must be inscribed for future generations. This campaign should spread across India, not just remain in Haryana.”
He called the memorial a beacon of inspiration for the youth and stressed the need for continued remembrance of India’s brave soldiers. Without directly commenting on recent national security lapses and espionage concerns, Rajesh urged constant vigilance, even within families. “The gravity of such threats demands strong government action,” he said.
Earlier, a Tiranga Yatra led by Sumit Narwal and Hawa Singh was held in the village, culminating at the Smarak. “Vinay was a brave and bright son of the soil. The cowardly terror attack took him from us, but our forces have responded with strength and resolve,” Sumit said.
Amit Narwal, husband of village sarpanch Pooja, said, “This memorial is dedicated to all martyrs from the district. It will stand as a symbol of our respect and remembrance.”
Karnal MP and Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s representative Kavinder Rana also addressed the gathering, reaffirming the government’s firm stand against terrorism. He praised the valour of the armed forces, especially in light of Operation Sindoor, saying, “The country is proud of its soldiers and their sacrifices.”
