Bahujan Samajwadi Party chief Mayawati appointed her nephew Akash Anand as the party's new chief national coordinator on Sunday. The post was reportedly specially created to accommodate Anand, making him virtually second in command in the party.

As chief national coordinator, Anand will function above the three national coordinators. Anand has been appointed in the key role a month after he was brought back into the party fold.

In a post on X, Anand thanked party chief Mayawati for bringing him back into the BSP organisational setup and entrusting him with the responsibility. "Respected Behen (Sister) Ji has given me the responsibility of the party’s Chief National Coordinator. I express my heartfelt gratitude to respected  Behen Ji. She has forgiven my mistakes and given me an opportunity to contribute to strengthening the Bahujan mission and movement." Anand said he would work with complete dedication in the interest of the party and the movement and will never let Mayawati down.

Anand, who was considered Mayawati's political heir was expelled from the party in March over a controversial post. He was removed from the party, accusing him of being influenced by his father-in-law, who Mayawati had earlier expelled from the BSP for allegedly trying to split the party. He was taken back into the party after he publicly apologised for his remarks. Anand was taken back into the party fold after he asserted that he considers Mayawati as her only political guru.
