PM to Convene Meeting on Polavaram Project with CMs of 4 States including Odisha on May 28

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a high-level meeting on May 28 with the Chief Ministers of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh to address concerns surrounding the Polavaram project, according to national media reports.

It would be PM Modi’s first dedicated discussion on the contentious multi-purpose irrigation project.

However, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed that he has no information about a meeting involving the Chief Ministers. He said that the discussions might instead involve Chief Secretaries and senior officials from the respective states.

The meeting aims to resolve escalating interstate tensions over the Polavaram project, located on the Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh.

Designed for irrigation, hydropower generation, and drinking water supply, the project has sparked objections from neighboring states, particularly Odisha, due to fears of village submergence and displacement of tribal communities.

Odisha has repeatedly flagged concerns about the project’s potential to flood areas within its borders, while Andhra Pradesh emphasizes its critical role in regional development.
